The Imperial Guard are an elite army who's sole duty is to protect the life of the Emperor. There are currently 3 legions of Imperial Guard, commanded by General, Marquis Warren Fortiscue-Marcus. They have permanent quarters in Eboracum city, and at least 1 legion always accompany the Emperor if he travels outside the city. They have excellent equipment, including visor helmets like those used by the militia, which come equipped with sorcerous communication crystals in every helmet, thus allowing instant voice speech between any soldiers.
One legion is normally assigned to protect the Imperial Palace in Eboracum, and one is normally assigned to protect the person of the Emperor wherever he currently is. The third legion is in reserve, alternating with the other two.
This elite army has the job of providing personal defences for the rest of the Imperial government and the Senate. There are 5 legions, under the command of General, Marquis Howard Green. One legion is specifically assigned the defence of the Senate and the Senator's offices in Eboracum. A second legion is kept in reserve and training. The remaining legions are distributed in their separate cohorts to the defence of Provincial and Regional Governors, Imperial Judges, and ministers of the government.
The Mage Corps are a unit comprising qualified Spellworkers and mages to undertake battle magics and defence magics. They are organised around the actual magic practitioners, who are always of officer rank, with the support staff comprising the other ranks. The Centurion-Mage is the honorary rank of a graduated military mage.
There are units of Mage Corps attached to both the Imperial and the Praetorian Guard, and many other legions.
There are currently 50 legions of Strike troops (250,000 men). Very few of these are currently assigned on the Primal Realm, as the war is now mostly being fought in other shadows, south of the 60th Parallel. These legions are currently configured into 6 armies, 5 of 9 legions each, and one of 5 legions. There are 6 strike legion generals.
In terms of the hierarchy of the army, after the Imperial and Praetorian guard, the strike legions are seen as the superior force to be involved with.
The most prestigious of all the Garrison armies is the one which is based on the primal realm in Britainnia. 5 legions under General, Marquis Lionel Lincolnstone have the job of ensuring the security of the British Isles. The garrison is assigned in cohorts, mostly around the coastlines of Britain.
The remainder of Empire lands in the Primal Realm are garrisoned by an huge army of 200 legions (1,000,000 men), commanded by High General Marquis Douglas Laramaine. It is their job to defend against attacks by the Federation on the Primal Realm.
This is the senior Militia force in all the Empire, having jurisdiction as it does in the Capital City. General, Prince Brian Helgram is in command of 6 legions of Militia, with 2 Commissioners below him, with a city population of around a million.
New Canada lays at about the 50th parallel. As such it is well within the zone where both the Federation and the technocracy have influence. However it is a more real realm than would normally be the case that far out, due to the presence of a Lesser Aurellis in the capital, New Yorvik. The realm was completely cleared of Federation influence in 597, and has remained so ever since.
The Empire has control of the American continent, and 100 legions (500,000 men) of garrison defend this land, under the command of the Regional Governor, High General, Marquis Morris Lewis-Vernus.
This is probably the second most prestigious police force in the empire. Command of this force rests with General, Sir Morgan Grigson.
These are an elite legion, which is feared and revered throughout the Empire. Where they are based and who they are is not widely known, even amongst the rest of the army. They have never been defeated.
This is the unit responsible for the health of the army. The Centurion-Healer is the honorary rank of a graduate healer (mage or mundane) with the support staff (nurses etc) comprising the lower ranks. Senior medics will have higher ranks. The initiates of Claire are not permitted by Claire to join the army, so there are none in the Medical Corps.
This unit is responsible for the army's major travel operations. The pilots within this corps all have at least the rank Centurion-Pilot, and the lower ranks act as the muscle and dogs-bodies for the transportation. Active military pilots are still members of the Guild of Pilots, though they are excluded from commercial pilot operations, and are subject to military command structure. It is not normal for the army to have pilots of higher status than Master-pilots because they usually prefer not to transport more than a train full at once, for safety and security reasons. Courier Pilots get Brass wings as extra insignia - Silver for Master Pilots, and Gold for Grand Pilots.
A train of 10 carriages can carry about 1200 people. In essence that's two cohorts. Five trainloads are therefore needed to move a whole legion.
